Work: Love it or Leave it?

Today is Labor Day in the United States and I hope that working Americans are taking their much-deserved day of rest.

I am not.

I am not the restful type; although I do believe in an hour of solitude as often as I can get it.  (But a whole day, on a Monday, come on!)  Just kidding - enjoy your day!

Reflecting on America’s work culture these days I am often amused by the complaints and typical forms of office politics I witness.

You know the kind of stuff I’m talking about – this person doesn’t get along with that person so it makes another person tense enough that she can’t stand her job but she can’t afford to quit so she takes it out on someone else who is completely unaware of what’s going on possibly because she’s new or just stupid, the jury is still out on that one . . .you get the drift.  You’ve lived it.

I’ve been reading Creating Money by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer over the last month and the guidance provided has been profound.  I highly recommend the book, if you are ready to open your mind.  And when I say that, I mean it.  You must either have an open mind already, or be willing to get it wide open, or you will not understand the concepts conveyed in this work.

Let me give you an example.  I’ll provide you with a direct quote, but I need to set it up first.

Let’s say that you have a complaint with your current job.  Take a moment right now to think of something.  It can be something minor or major, it can be with a supervisor or co-worker, it can basically be anything.  It would be best if you choose something that really gets under your craw.  It’s even better, if you choose something that gets you so upset when you think about it that you actually think about quitting, just getting out.  “Why should I waste my time with this company?  They don’t care about me why should I care about them?”  Etc.

Now, here’s the quote:

“Every uncomfortable situation is teaching you valuable lessons you need to learn.  If you do not learn the lessons in the job you have, you will create similar situations in your new job to teach you the same lessons.”

Have you ever thought of that before?  I had not.

Paraphrasing for a moment and bringing in other philosophies:  So, every situation, even at work, is the result of what we create through the law of attraction.  We choose these situations because there is something in them for us to learn.  If we don’t learn our lesson now, in this job, we’ll just take them with us wherever we go.  It’s a similar concept as “wherever you go, you take yourself with you,” or “wherever you go, there you are.”

Have you ever heard someone say, “Everywhere I go, this same thing always happens to me?”  I have heard that, and said that, so many times!  Now, I understand why.

Every situation is a reflection of our own selves.  I know many of you are sitting there in full agreement, and many of you are sitting there asking, “How in the world did I create this?  This is all her fault!  I would not have created this.”  I know, I  know.  But my personal experience is that we do create everything around us.  Even the “bad,” or, put a little lighter, the less desirable stuff.

So how do we learn our lessons at a faster rate so that we can move on to joy?

Well, just knowing that this is going on in the first place will help.  If you accept that what I and the authors of this book are saying as true, then first just take a step back and reflect on the situation.  Look at it from all angles.  Then ask yourself, “What is the lesson here?  What is it I need to learn about myself that this situation is trying to teach me?

Remember, it is all about you.  It’s not about them.  “They” are actors in your play.  The lesson is yours and yours alone.  What is it?

My advice, if you’re thinking of leaving a job in this situation, is that it’s fine to leave if your work no longer inspires you.  There are many avenues on this topic that I will address in later posts, but for now, for this post, remember this:  Learn whatever the lesson is in this job before you leave it; otherwise you’re setting yourself up to have to learn it in your next job.

    Debra,
I loved this post. It is so fitting for me at present. I identified with that quote 100%. Luckily for me, I had a supervisor at one point who also believed this and helped me work through many inferiority complexes. Now that I have learned my lessons, I am moving on from this job. My last day is tomorrow. I am now on search for the next best thing! Thanks for bringing out this point. I am looking forward to other posts on your thoughts with that book.
    Have a great day.
