Use Personas for Greater Success

I am developing a course for a local college where we intend to teach high school juniors and seniors how to create the life they want.  One of the subjects I intend to cover, and always cover in seminars of this type, is the concept of “fake it until you make it.”  For young audiences, I talk in detail about what that saying means with regard to not lying on a resume or misrepresenting yourself in some way.   I know that this audience, by blog readers, do not need a lecture on that, but I do wonder how many of you are using the power of personas to achieve greater success in your life.  Let me share some of my experiences with you.

One area of my life that I love to explore is the art of a keeping a sparkling clean, clutter-free home.  I find that a well-kept house, inside and out, provides for a more peaceful, easier-to-think-and-create existence.  So one persona that I love to take on is that of Bree Hodge from the ABC show Desperate Housewives.  Now, what exactly do I mean by “take on?”  Well, it goes something like this.

When “Debra” doesn’t feel like cleaning the house, making the bed, taking out the trash, pulling weeds, or anything else that contributes to this desire, I stop and think, “What would ‘Bree’ do?”  BAM!  That’s usually all it takes to get me going.  I mean, if Marsha Cross can play Bree, I can too, right?  It’s fun, and I get so much accomplished.  But your persona doesn’t have to a fictional character.  Here’s another example.

I used to hate grocery shopping.  Then one day while watching Giada De Laurentiis on the Food Network, I saw her shopping.  For some reason, I was mesmerized.  I watched how she interacted with the people helping her and thought, “I wonder if I could get the same reaction from the people behind the meat counter at Kroger.”  Well, there’s nothing like trying something just once to prove it to yourself and guess what – it worked!  Not only did they respond well, but I had so much fun “acting the part.”

I’m finding that the more fun I have in my life the more success I seem to experience; more money comes my way, my relationships run smoother, opportunities and helpful people show up from out of nowhere.

I believe the reason I experience greater success when I’m using a persona is that by developing your persona, you are setting your vibrational tone.  Much like people respond to your attitude, the universe responds to the vibration you send out.  If you behave like a well-organized person, both the people around you and the universe will respond to you in like manner – they will treat you like an organized person.  Doesn’t that just make good sense?

I challenge you today to develop a persona.  It’s fun to pretend.  Some of the most successful people in the world are those who have fun while they work.  Why not give it a try?

Until next time,

Live joyfully!

    Hi Debra,
Great post! I love it. In fact I wrote on ‘Fake it until you make it!’ http://www.alaivani.com/Blog/tabid/56/EntryID/18/Default.aspx If you find time you can read that.
I am curious, though when you’re doing personas (which I have tried too) do you find it takes some energy to put yourself in that role? I suppose actors have to do this too… every person, every character in life does have different energy. Some may argue that putting one self in a persona to get the job done may be coming off fake, but I think the opposite- I think it’s good to experiment with ourselves and see how far we can take ourselves, we may end up finding out things we like we never would otherwise!PS That class sounds super cool! Wish I could attend.

    Jennifer,

I’ll definitely check out your post - look for my comments.

I actually find that it increases my energy - maybe because I have to “muster it up?”

    As for being fake–

There are some people I wish would be more fake! Ha!

Attend my class? Honey, you could teach this class!

I always appreciate your comments Jennifer–

    Take care–

    Debra-

Thanks for checking out the Carnival over at my blog.

I’ve used a similar technique to what you are speaking of here - when I add new lines of services to my firm, I “hold myself out” as an expert by writing about it and teaching classes, though I may have much to learn still.

Wham! We receive instant expert-status! And that brings in the business. Though we may be new to this line of service, we get the business anyway (and have to figure out how to provide the service real fast!).

Is that kinda what you’re talking about?

    Thanks, Jason M. Blumer

That’s actually taking it to a whole new level, Jason, but yes - that is what I’m talking about. Your experience reminds me of the good ol’ days when I used to teach end-user computer training classes. Sometimes I would have just learned the material the day before my students, but they thought I was an expert. Granted, I always knew more than they did, but eventually, I became that expert.

Thanks for sharing that - you added a lot to this article!

    Hi Debra,
I love this strategy and as I think back I have even used it successfully in the past–
but not recently–thanks for the reminder!

(and while I love the idea of channeling “Bree” that will take some imagination on my part–maybe I’ll take up that challenge!)

    Hi Karen,

You don’t have to channel Bree all day - just until you get those household chores caught up - or a couple of hours, whichever comes first!

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you!

I think this is great. I went for an actor course before with some trainer who train movie stars in Hollywoods.

In the acting course, we need to practice to be another person within seconds. From that course, I learn that everyone is good at pretending, some just try to ignore that ability and some suppress it. If you embrace it and stop resisting that ability of yours, you can be a success in life.

“You can’t be a boss who you are in your company with your family. You act as a boss when you are in the company. You act as a caring father and husband. You are a sincere friend in front of you friend. You are actually already acting everywhere in your life.”

Excellent point, Alex. We do develop different personas around different people for the various aspects of our lives already. Thanks for pointing that out.
