Stay Focused On Results

Have you ever given up on a project about halfway into it?  Many of us do that with our goals and dreams. Living your dream and creating the life you want is hard sometimes.  The actual work becomes so difficult, we forget about the reward at the end – living our dream - so we quit.  Then a few months down the road, we decide to start again, only to follow the same pattern.

Successful people have a way of visualizing the big dream – they focus on the result, not the work.  I can’t tell you how many times in developing this website I’ve almost given up.  I have literally had the thought, “Forget it.  This is too hard, I can’t do this.  No one should have to go through this, there’s got to be an easier way.”  Then I realized there was an easier way; I could hire someone to design the site for me.  But then I’d be at their mercy every time I needed to change it.  I want a site that I can re-design and customize on a moment’s notice.  If I give a speech and want to make materials available to that audience alone, I want to be able to do that immediately and on my own.  Luckily, I’m a very determined person who doesn’t give up easily.  I don’t like to give in and let something beat me.  More appropriately, I was able to keep my thoughts focused on the desired result instead of how complicated the process.

I’m still working on my site – constantly.  There’s a lot more I want to change and the list grows daily, but I can do it all myself and I’m constantly learning.  I also enjoy the creative side of maintaining my site myself. With each new language I learn, it seems as if there’s another that must be learned to go with it.  Then there’s the marketing side with new methods introduced daily.  There’s also the profitability side, which accounts for a lot of stress as well.  The important thing is that I’m living my dream of motivating, educating, and inspiring others to be their best through my writing, speaking and consulting.  This site is the glue that holds all of that together and to turn it over to someone else would not work for me.  So when the going gets tough, even painful at times, I let my “control freak” kick in and guide me through the process.

How to overcome the strong notion to quit

So what are some ways that you can overcome that strong notion we all get when the going gets tough to just call it quits?  I’ve put together some ideas and thoughts for you that have helped me.  First of all, take a step back and ask yourself, “What am I trying to do?  What is the desired result?”  If that desired result is strong enough, it will keep you going.  That’s what kept me going on this project and does so almost daily.  I remind myself of my unwavering desire to have complete control over my website.  That’s the most important aspect of my career right now.

Realize that it’s not really you

Those thoughts of, “I’m not smart enough to do this,” or any version of, “I can’t,” are just hogwash.  You can do it or you wouldn’t have started/been assigned the project to begin with.  More than likely, you just need to eat something, take a break, go for a walk, read something light, or get some sunlight - REFRESH!  At the very least, you need some perspective.  Refuse to give in to any negativity, wherever it’s coming from.

Make sure it’s your goal/dream

It’s common for us to get caught up in someone else’s dream.  If you’re faced with a situation where the work should be easy for you to accomplish, and you know how to do virtually everything required to accomplish it, but you’re still confronting blockages, think about whether or not this is your goal.  Or, are you being used to accomplish someone else’s dream?  When you work for someone else, it’s easy to get caught up in this, especially if you’ve chosen a field you’re not passionate about.  Assuming you can’t quit, (and I strongly recommend you not quit a project you’ve given your word to complete), think about what your individual reward is for the attainment of this goal.  Is it money?  Is it a better position within the company once this project is completed?  Find that incentive and focus on it.  As Brian Tracy puts it, “Let your vision of the future guide your present performance.”

Think of it as easy

With whatever you have to do today, think of it as easy, and it will be.  Don’t believe the voice in your head telling you that the accomplishment of a particular task is going to be difficult.  So you have to design a new website today?  Easy!  You’re on your way to an important meeting where you’re expected to a sign a $5 million account?  Easy!  You have only two hours to clean your two-story home?  Easy!   Why is it easy?  Because it’s important to you.

Anytime you concentrate on the difficulty of the work instead of its results or rewards, you are likely to become discouraged.  Dwell on it too long, and you will develop self-pity instead of self-discipline.  The next time you’re facing a must-do task and you’re thinking of giving up instead of paying the price, change your focus.  Count the benefits of doing what’s important, and then dive in.

Getting Ahead in Today’s Economy

The Law of Capital says that your most valuable asset, in terms of cash flow, is your physical and mental capital - your earning ability.

Your Earning Ability

You may not even be aware that, unless you are wealthy already, your ability to work is the most valuable asset that you have. By utilizing your earning ability to its fullest, you can bring thousands of dollars each year into your life. By applying your earning ability to the production of valuable goods and services, you can generate sufficient money to pay for all the things that you want in life. The amount of money that you are paid today is a direct measure of the extent to which you have developed your earning ability so far. If you are currently looking for a job, whether you’ve just graduated school or are recently unemployed, let’s explore some factors that make you more employable.  If you are an entrepreneur or professional, these concepts will make you more marketable.

Use Your Time Well

The first corollary of the Law of Capital says: “Your most precious resource is your time.” Your time is really all you have to sell. How much time you put in and how much of yourself you put into that time, largely determines your earning ability. Poor time management is one of the major reasons for poor productivity and underachievement in every industry in America. It is the number one problem for both managers and salespeople in every field, and can be applied to almost every level of worker.  Develop good time management habits and stick with them.

Invest Yourself Carefully

The second corollary of the Law of Capital says: “Time and money can be either spent or invested.” One of the smartest things that you can do is to invest three percent of your earnings every month back into yourself on personal and professional development, on becoming better at the most important things you do. In fact, if you just invested as much in your mind each year as you do in your car, that one thing alone could make you wealthy.

Invest one hour of your time reading in your field every day. Listen to audio programs in your car. Attend every course that can advance you in your career. Get personal and professional coaching to help you to get the very best out of yourself.

Get Better At the Things You Do

There is nothing that will give you a bigger and better “bang” for your buck than reinvesting a part of your time and money back into your capability to earn even more.  All wealthy and successful people have learned this sooner or later, and all poor and unhappy people are still trying to figure it out.

Show Up

Show up for work and show up for your life.  Be enthusiastic at and about your job.  In small businesses, a person with a super attitude will be kept in a lay-off situation over the person with skill.  Why?  The great attitude is easier to be around, work with, and gives us hope for the future.  It’s also vital to keep absenteeism at bay.  Using every little excuse you can think of to not go to work will make you the first one laid off.

If you have your own business, keep the doors open as much as possible.  You do love your work, don’t you?  You’ve chosen a career that you’re passionate about, so use that energy to make yourself more marketable.  Again, a person with a great attitude is someone others want to be around and do business with.

Increase Your Return on Life

The purpose of corporate strategic planning is to increase “return on equity” or ROE. This requires organizing and reorganizing corporate activities so that the company is earning a higher return on the capital invested in the organization. In your work life, your personal equity is your mental and emotional capital.  Practice personal strategic planning to earn the highest possible return on your human capital, to increase your “return on energy.” This way of viewing yourself must become a key part of your attitude throughout your work life.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do to apply this law immediately:

First, create a list of your output responsibilities, the things you do that represent accomplishments, not activities. Examine the list and rank the tasks by priority, on the basis of the value of the work to your company.

Second, make a list of all the things you do, day in and day out. Take this list to your boss and ask him or her to rank your tasks in terms of how valuable he or she considers them to be.  (You might be surprised at how you think differently and wouldn’t it be better to know that now, rather during a termination interview?)  Then resolve to work on your most valuable tasks every minute of every day.

Until next time,

Counting Calories is Becoming Popular Again

The most popular post on this website is How I Lost 25 Pounds in One Month.  Every day I get emails and comments from around the world regarding my method of losing weight by maintaining a positive attitude and being meticulous about what you eat.

I was sharing this information with my massage therapist last week and telling her how surprised I am at how many people call my basic calorie-counting plan, “new.”  She explained to me, “Well, it’s new to us.”  And hopefully, it’s about to get easier as well.

Our local paper printed an article this past weekend from the New York Times service, titled, “Counting calories becoming easier.”  Let me tell you:  THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!

Due to popular demand and a couple of class-action lawsuits, more and more restaurant chains and food manufacturers are going to be displaying accurate, single-serving calorie counts right on the menu – next to the price.  (Or on the front of the product.)

Imagine being able to walk into any restaurant and know exactly how many calories are in that meal #1, and making an informed decision about your health, without having to do a lot of research on the internet in advance – about time, I say.   What’s more, legislation will require restaurants to display the accurate calorie count, and make adjustments if their recipe, preparation, or menu changes.

Just seeing those calories displayed openly will make nearly everyone think twice before ordering the cheapest item on the menu.  (It is still true that eating healthfully is more expensive both at the grocery store and in the restaurant – but that’s another post!)

My greatest hope is that the outcome of this will be a healthier America and world.  I know that at times it seems daunting to count calories and watch what we eat, but I also know that a lot of that is due to the fact that it is so difficult to find out exactly how many calories are in some of our favorite dishes, which makes it difficult to adjust our intake accordingly.  This doesn’t mean we have to never have that favorite item again, which is what the restaurants have always been afraid of, it just means that we will “save” for it, or eat less at the next 3 meals.  Of course, many of us do change how we eat forever once we become educated about food energy, but, as with everything in life, we have a right to make an informed choice.

I will keep you posted on updates to this issue as I discover them.  Please feel free to share resources you find helpful by posting a comment below.

I’ve added Weight Loss Coaching to my list of Services. If you’d like help in developing a system just for you, want someone to really cheer you on, have your best interest at heart, and help you figure out why things aren’t working exactly as you’d like, I can help you.  Consultations are free, and the most you’ll ever pay is $75.00 (USD).  For more details, visit my Services page, read about My Coaching Philosophy, or just email me.

Tips for Inspiration and Success

Whether you’re starting a new business or taking the leap and getting an online degree, having confidence in yourself is vitally important. We all find our inspiration in different places, but here are five tips to help with almost any endeavor – and even just life in general:

  1. Ignore Everyone. Whether you have a new idea or are simply starting a new phase of your life, the more original the thought, the less good advice you will be able to receive. You won’t know if your decision to go back to school is a wise one until you’ve attended classes, and you won’t know at the moment of creation if your business proposal or novel idea is any good, but neither will anyone else. Don’t ask friends for their advice, because they don’t know the inside of your brain the way you do. Don’t ask colleagues either, as they’re likely to see anything you do as competition. Listen to yourself, and make yourself your top priority.
  2. Put In the Hours. Anything worthwhile takes what sometimes seems like forever, but 90% of what separates the successful people from the unsuccessful people is time and effort. If someone you work with is more successful than you are, they’re probably putting in a lot more time. If you have to balance an online course and work, or writing a novel and work, carve the time that you need out of the rest of your life, but don’t quit your day job. Just allot a couple of hours a night to writing or studying or creating art, and keep your appointment with yourself faithfully.
  3. Everyone Has Their Own Mountain. Everyone has their own metaphoric mountain to climb. For the student, returning to classes after years away, it may be the concept of homework, or it may be simple fear of math. For the writer or artist, it’s the fear that whatever they create isn’t “good.”  It’s important to remember that every mountain has more than one route to the summit. You may never actually make it to the top, but that’s okay, as long as you try. Learning and creating share one truth: they are about the journey, not the destination. This does not mean you shouldn’t have a goal – it just means you have to find your own path toward it. Just by deciding to enroll in a class, start a new business, or paint a masterpiece, you’ve taken the first step.
  4. Passion Can’t Be Bought. We all have a tiny piece of our psyches that make us restless and ambitious, no matter how successful we may appear to be. That spark is passion, and you can’t buy it. It doesn’t matter what your passion is for: education, language, art, business, saving the world, what does matter is that you feed your passion, challenge yourself, and keep striving for more. Never settle.
  5. Do It For Yourself. The class you’re taking might lead to a better job. The art you create might lead to fame and fortune. Both are great, but anything you do should be for your own satisfaction and happiness first, and any benefit should just be a bonus. If you do anything with money, or other people, as the motivation, you may reach your goal, but you won’t be content.

Business, art, writing and education are all wonderful things, but success only comes from hard work, confidence and motivation. Put in the hours necessary, stay passionate, and never listen to naysayers, and you’ll achieve every task you set out to complete.

The Power of Passion and How to Develop It

Fanatic.  Workaholic.  Over-the-top.  Insane.  Sick.
Electrifying.  Magnetic.  Charismatic.  Enthusiastic.  Intelligent.

All of these adjectives have been used to describe someone who is passionate.

An accountant who works until 11 PM – workaholic.
A motivational speaker who gets her audience on their feet – electrifying.
A dentist with 5 times the amount of annually required CE – over-the-top.
A salesperson with customers waiting in line – magnetic.

It seems that there are some industries where it’s okay to have passion for your work, yet others where everyone assumes that if you’re in that industry, you’re there because you have to be.

The truth is, anything you do can be electrifying and profitable when it is infused with the power of passion.

Why is passion so powerful?

First of all, it makes you more informed at what you do, which typically makes you better at it.  The better you are at something, the more confident you become.  The more confident you are, the more magnetic you are, and many times, the more money you make.  So passion can mean earning more money – especially in the long run.

Secondly, having passion for a subject is a lot more fun than just tolerating it.  Imagine the cleaning woman who is enthused about her work, merrily singing and enjoying the process, compared to the one who is simply going through the motions.

Don’t be one of those people who goes through life performing only what is necessary to get through it.  Follow these 7 steps to become more passionate about your life today.

  1. Imagine yourself being passionate.  Whether it’s a particular subject you want to develop, or life itself, imagine your new, passionate self.  What’s different?  Do you smile more?  Go to the gym?  Greet others with more vigor?  How does the passionate you look and feel?
  2. Start with something you are already passionate about and take the time to really feel what that feels like.   I live in Kentucky where many people are passionate about our two world-renowned college basketball teams: the University of Louisville, and the University of Kentucky.  If those people could take that passion they exhibit during a big game to work on Monday morning, oh – what a world that would be!  Anything that you have fun doing will bring you that feeling that I’m talking about.  Once you’re there, try applying that feeling to whatever subject you’re wanting to develop a passion for.  Transference – in a good way!
  3. Read and research your topic.  I can always get myself excited for a subject just by reading about it.  Why do you think that is?  Most writers are passionate about their subject matter.  When they’re not, it shows.  (Read – bores you to death!)
  4. Develop and enhance your skills in that area.  Gardening enthusiasts can relate to this, but it applies to everyone.  Beyond just reading about the subject, get hands-on with it.  Developing your skills in an area will help you develop your passion.  Doing more with your life will help you become more enthusiastic about your life.
  5. Ask, “what if?”  Once you’ve become knowledgeable and have acquired a certain level of skill, challenge the currently accepted theories in the subject area.  New inventions are created this way.
  6. Share your passion – teach others.  You don’t really know something until you have to teach it.  Teaching is also selling.  When you have to stand in front of people and sell them something, you’d darn well better be passionate about it.  Just talking about the subject can ignite that little spark you need to take your passion to the next level.
  7. Feed your passion by surrounding yourself with others who already have and share your zeal.  Professional organizations quite often fill the bill nicely here.  Not only are the other participants “freaks” about the topic, but these associations offer education and a chance to develop skills as well.

The most important factor in developing passion is a true desire to do so.  So being passionate about being passionate would be the first place to start!

Cleaning Closets

I am cleaning out my closets this week and doing my seasonal clothing change-over.  It reminds me of many of my de-cluttering rules so today I’d like to share my favorite clothing decision tip:  If you don’t love the way you feel when you wear it, toss it.  (Of course, “toss it,” can mean throw it away, donate it, or sell it.)

We all get into the habit of keeping items “just in case.”  My #1 excuse is, “Well, I could wear it while gardening,” but then I never do.  I like to look good when I’m pulling weeds and, after all, the neighbors are watching!

If you have items in your closet that you’re keeping out of guilt, whether someone gave it to you or you wish you could fit into it, or you’re afraid you’ll gain the weight back – whatever – get over it!

And before you buy anything else, consider the cost of acquisition.  Not only does having a lot of clothing require storage space, there’s also the factor of shopping and caring for needless items, and always having to decide what to do with them.

I use a similar rule when I shop – if I don’t love it, I don’t buy it.  A piece of clothing should make me feel good, not just look good on me.

The bottom line is that it is better to have a few items/outfits that you love and feel great when you wear them, than to have hundreds that weigh you down.

If you’re wondering if this method would work for you, just get rid of half the stuff you don’t like anymore and see if you don’t feel better.  I know you’ll be glad you did, and you’ll be inspired to get rid of the rest!

Until next time,

A Fresh Perspective on Adversity

I talk a lot about changing your perspective in order to maintain a positive attitude.  Today, I have a fresh perspective and even better reason for facing adversity head on.

When you face a challenge, whether it’s a financial crisis, relationship issue, or anything that causes upset, you grow in a way that means you will never face that same challenge exactly that way again.  It’s not just that dealing with issues openly makes you stronger, it gives you experience that makes you exponentially stronger than someone who has not dealt with that issue.  Let me give you an example.

This week my husband alerted me to an issue with an employee.  She has made a $1,600.00 mistake on another employee’s account.  I could fire her and/or the other employees involved.  I could scold everyone sternly and threaten them within an inch of their lives, (don’t think it hasn’t occurred to me!), but when I researched the issue with her calmly, I discovered that there was a flaw in her thinking and in her training, for which I am partly responsible.

The ultimate result will be a change in our office policy on how employee’s accounts are handled, and, rest assured, this employee will not make this mistake again.  She is a more valuable employee to me now because she will be more successful in the future.  I am a better employer because I corrected an overlooked flaw in my policy.

Every adversity is setting you up for future success.  No matter what it is.  Bo Bennett says,

“Think of success as a game of chance in which you have control over the odds. As you begin to master concepts in personal achievement, you are increasing your odds of achieving success.”

Adversity is often the greatest fuel to personal achievement.  Stack the cards in your favor and face your challenges head on.

How to Conquer Fear

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

Dale Carnegie

I want you to sit and think for just a few seconds about the people in your life who are the most fearful.  Also think about the most fearful times in your own life.  How active are fearful people?  From my perspective, not very.

Now, I know that most of the people who read this blog are pretty astute spiritually and mentally.  You come here for tips and the latest in personal development techniques.  But fear is something we must keep constantly in check.  Especially when the media is constantly warning us about things we should be fearful of.  Just remember to keep busy.  Afraid you’re going to lose your job? Get another one.  Do something about the situation.  So what if you have to take a job outside of your current field – it might be a blessing in disguise, in fact, it probably is!  You could land on a position that brings your passion out of you.  (I am still perplexed at the fact that we have rising unemployment rates, yet I see “Help Wanted” signs everywhere I go, and my husband is looking for 2 full-time employees in his dental practice.)

Fear serves no purpose except to give “reporters” a job and politicians something to debate about.  Maybe that’s a noble enough cause, but I prefer to keep my nose to the grindstone, my hand to the plough, and to let my light shine.  The only time I’ve ever been fearful is when I stop working and start worrying.  The best cycle is to work, rest, and be happy (think positive thoughts) as you work and rest.  Don’t worry about tomorrow; just take care of right now. In any given moment, you should be in one of two action modes:  work or rest.  At all times, strive to be in the state of joy, and things will seem to magically fall into place for you.  Control your perspective, maintain your joy, and either work or rest according to how you feel.

Whatever it is that you are fearful of, go out and do something about it right now.  Just taking action, whether anything comes from it or not, will help you to feel better, and how you feel is everything.

Until next time,
Live joyfully!

While everyone is screaming about the economy, I prefer to help people find ways of feeling better.  Interestingly, I do this all the time, it’s just that now that “times are tough,” I seem to have a larger audience.  Here are 21 ways to enjoy your time this weekend that won’t cost anything.

  1. Sleep late, and enjoy it (instead of feeling guilty.)
  2. Meditate.
  3. Give each pet, child, spouse, sibling, parent, and other significant persons in your life one hour of your complete, undivided attention.  Play with them; ask them about their day/life, and really listen.
  4. Read a motivational book.
  5. Read something just for fun – your favorite prose.  Or catch up on that pile of magazines.  Enjoy the time, realizing that it is your intent to spend this time this way.
  6. Create a list of things you love.  (The way you feel afterward will explain why I’ve included it here.)
  7. Take a nice, long, warm bath or shower.
  8. Dance to your favorite music for one hour – pretend it’s a marathon.
  9. Work on or create your Personal Strategic Plan.
  10. Think about something in your life you would like to change, trusting that there is an answer.  Now take a nap and let your subconscious work on a solution.
  11. Pretend that for now you work for yourself - you are self-employed.  You have complete control over your time, effort and energy.  What do you want to create right this minute?
  12. De-clutter.
  13. Organize an area of your home.
  14. Plan your meals for the next week.  Perhaps there is a certain diet you’d like to try, or you’d like to start cooking more from scratch.  You have all those cookbooks and diet plans – put them to use!
  15. Create a list of all the good things in your life right now.
  16. Catch up on all your laundry and ironing.
  17. Give the house a good cleaning and airing out.
  18. Spend time getting to know one of your neighbors.
  19. Visualize your life as you would like it to be.  Write it out.
  20. Work out.  You don’t have to join a gym.  Go for a vigorous walk, jog, play a game of basketball, dance, whatever you love to do – just give your body the motion it craves.
  21. Rest.  Work hard, play hard, and you will rest well.  Get organized and in control and you will have peace of mind that will allow your mind to rest as well.  Try it; you’ll be glad you did!

Until next time,
Live joyfully!

5 Steps to Solving Any Crisis

Your ability to focus and change your perspective is the two most important skill you can develop to succeed in your career and in your life. When a crisis hits, your ability to quickly move to a solution-oriented mindset will directly affect the longevity of the perceived problem.  Today I want to discuss ways to do just that.

A Systematic Process
The key to effective problem solving and decision-making is to go through the process systematically.  Whether you prefer to work through issues by yourself, or brainstorm with other people, these 5 steps will get you started on the right track.

  1. Define the Problem Clearly
At the onset, ask the question, “What exactly is the problem?” Clarity of definition will resolve 50% of the issues before they go any further.  Sometimes problems aren’t what they seem on the surface.  Many times, it is our perception that has us in a tizzy.  Look for the real issue, and try to find the positive aspects, even if it’s just that this is a lesson to be learned.  You might be surprised at how many times the issue isn’t as big as what you’re making of it.
  2. Focus on the Future
When discussing a problem, be sure to focus on the future rather than the past. Ask the question, “Where do we go from here?” “What are our options?” Too many problem-solving discussions/meetings end up focusing all of the attention of all the people present on what happened in the past and who is to blame. The effective business owner or manager focuses on where the company and the individuals are going, and what can happen in the future - the only part of the equation over which anyone has any control anyway.
  3. Think and Talk About the Solutions
Whenever the issue comes to your mind, change your focus to the solution, or the desired result.  When someone asks you about the problem, talk about the solution.  Continuing to think or talk about the problem will only serve to prevent you from finding and realizing the solution.
  4. Increase Creativity
The discussion of solutions is inherently positive, uplifting, and has a tendency to release creativity amongst a group. A discussion of problems is inherently negative, de-motivating, and tends to inhibit creativity.  So when you’re discussing your situation, be sure to do so from an “I’m looking for solutions, here,” perspective, not a “listen to my woes,” attitude.  Be careful not to discuss your problems with people you know can’t or won’t help you.
  5. Think Positive
You can become a positive thinker simply by becoming a solution-oriented person rather than a problem-oriented person. If you get everyone in your organization thinking and talking in terms of solutions, you will be astonished at the quality and quantity of ideas that will emerge.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do immediately to become a better problem solver and decision maker.

  1. Take some time to be absolutely clear about the problem that is under discussion. Give some thought to what an ideal decision or solution would accomplish. Instead of focusing on the situation as it is, talk about the situation as you would like it to be.
  2. Keep the conversation focused on solutions, on what can be done in the future. The more you think and talk about solutions, the more positive and creative everyone will be and the better ideas you will come up with.

Until next time,
