Does Your Mission Motivate You?

According to the most popular motivational authors and speakers, one of the truest tests of a mission statement is this:  Does it make you leap out of bed in the morning?

I am not a morning person.  I’d like to be, so I’m working on it, but I don’t leap out of bed, usually.  Oh, if I have something really exciting going on and I remember it the first thing when I wake up I’ll sometimes “leap,” but most of my days are delightfully peaceful.  Easy and relaxed, with quiet enthusiasm - the way I like it to be most of the time.

So what does that say of my mission statement?  What does that say about the purpose I’ve chosen for this life experience?

When I first heard that concept expressed – that your mission should cause you to leap out of bed – it bummed me out a little.  I thought, “I can’t remember the last time I literally leaped out of bed.  Is my own mission to motivate, educate, and inspire others to be their best not motivating to me?  Boy, there’s some irony for you!”

Naturally, I had to reflect on this for a while.

I write my mission statement in a special journal every day.  It’s part of my morning ritual.  The reason I include this step in my daily routine is precisely because it motivates me.  It reminds me of what I truly want in life, and helps me prioritize my day.

It’s wonderful if your mission statement can literally cause you to leap out of bed.  But don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t.  Here’s the real question you should ask yourself about your mission statement:  Does it jump-start your motivation for life?

If so, you’re fine, regardless of your AM cradle habits.  If not, consider revising it until it does motivate you.  Your personal mission statement should resonate with your authentic self.  It is not something you write out of obligation or protocol.

Having a personal mission statement always brings me back to my true passion because as I write it out each morning, I can always feel whether I am in alignment with it or not, based on my schedule for the day.  I had an opportunity to be reminded of that lately and I am so thankful that I did not spend a lot of time on a tangent that did not correspond to my true desires.

A motivating mission statement is a powerful benchmark.  Do you have one?

Until next time,

Live joyfully!
