7 Ways to Jump-Start Your Intuition

Do you use your intuition as often as you’d like?  Do you trust your intuition?  I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard from women saying, “Every time I go against my gut feeling I end up regretting it,” and boy, can I relate!

Most women I know can recount multiple instances of both being aware of their sixth sense and being glad they listened to it, and instances of ignoring it with regrets.  Most men I know long for that connection.  My husband frequently calls me on “big things,” not because he needs my “permission,” but because he trusts my instinct.

Today’s post is going to focus on ways to get your juices flowing and heighten your intuition.  Whether you’re a woman wanting to feel connected a little quicker, or a man wanting to increase the connection with your inner being, these tips will help you get started.  Enjoy!

  1. Meditation. Almost every book I’ve ever read about developing your intuition discusses meditation as a starting point.  Personally this one is hard for me because I’m not the type to sit around doing (what I perceive as) nothing.  However, once I committed myself to One Hour of Solitude, the benefits greatly exceeded my ego’s inner whining and I began to feel that connection to All-That-Is.
  2. Journaling. This is truly my favorite.  When I’m contemplating an issue, I’ll either get out a notebook and pen, or get out my laptop.  I write the question or problem down and then ask, “How?”  How can I resolve this issue; how can I accumulate this money; how can I soften this relationship – you get the drift.  I’m not asking my conscious self and trying to force my own answers, instead I write down whatever comes to my mind and just let the words flow whether they make sense or not.  Eventually they will make sense – perfect sense.  One reason I like using the computer is because I can type much faster than I can write and I can get a lot accomplished very quickly, often within 5 minutes.
  3. Getting outdoors. There is just something about being connected with nature that opens up all of our senses  - including the sixth!  Perhaps it’s because we are connected to purer forms of energy – trees, grass, fresher air, etc.  I don’t know exactly what the reasoning is, but I know that I can have a dilemma on my computer, go outside and sit in my Adirondack chair for a few minutes, and come back in the house with the solution.  Try it; it works!
  4. Getting near water. Even if it’s just a picture of a waterfall or body of water, there’s something about H2O that soothes the nerves and makes the spirit more accessible.   When it rains, I can write all day long.  Many experts speculate that it’s the negative ions in the water – I don’t know, I just know that it works.  Ideas flow with water.
  5. Reading. There are many ways to connect with other people.  Typically we think of face-to-face, telephone, and e-mail.  But have you ever thought of connecting to someone by reading their book?  Try this.  If you want to feel a direct connection to a certain speaker, author, or famous person, buy one of their books.  Even if their dead, you’ll get a sense for that person’s personality and spirit.  Authors pour their hearts into their work, (believe me, I know), and it’s the cheapest way to get to know someone on a very deep level.
  6. Going on a rampage. A Rampage of Appreciation that is.  Why?  Doing so raises your vibration and this will automatically help you connect to your inner being.  Have you ever noticed that when you’re in a good mood, things just come to you?  Difficult tasks just fall into place somehow?  That’s because when you’re appreciating your now your inner being is doing a happy dance and sending you signals that inspire you to send out good vibrations of what you want and the law of attraction brings them to you.  Did that make sense?  Go back and read it again if it didn’t.  Anything you do to raise your vibration will open your intuitive connection.
  7. Performing a chakra spin. The chakras are the seven energy centers of the body and have long been revered in Eastern culture.  This video, Illuminated Chakras, by Anodea Judith is my favorite – perhaps because it’s only 3.5 minutes long.  There is a longer version available as well – nearly half an hour - just Google it under videos and you’ll find it.  Being a Type A personality, I first found the video a little silly.  At the same time, I found a certain amount of peace that came from watching it, so I vowed to give myself those 3.5 minutes every morning.  Perhaps my familiarity with the video turned those few moments into meditation, but whatever it did, it worked.  I gradually became more intuitive and am able to access my intuition or connection to source upon command.

Remember, God never refuses to talk to us; we have to be open to let that all-knowing source in.  You can do it – if I can – you can – and I have, so now it’s your turn!

I hope you’ve learned something new today and I’d love to hear from those of you who have more to add.  If you’ve been developing your intuition and can add to my list of 7, please do so by leaving a comment.

Until next time,

    Debra:

When I checked my RSS feed for your site and saw the word “intuition” in it, my stomach (the area where I get connected with the spirit) gave me a lurch.

So it was with great interest and enthuasism I read your post. It was wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

I often go to a small body of water near where I live, just to sit and soak up the sun and beauty of nature. I’ve gotten a lot of ideas that way.

Another way for me is to go for a long drive, with a pen and pad. Granted, it’s not easy to drive and write at the same time but I’ve done it! Some great ideas have come to me while driving.

Taking a shower has also opened the way for ideas to come through. I just have to remember what they were by the time I’m finished drying off!

    Stephen

    Stephen,

Thanks for adding those - I, too, love to drive for inspiration, and the shower always jump-starts my ideas for the day.

BTW - I knew it was time for an alignment on my car when the handwriting was too “shaky” to read - ha!

    Hi Debra,
    Great post.

My personal favorite way to encourage intuition is to look for meaningful symbols and metaphors in my daily life, as these can be pointing/encouraging/intuiting us in a particular direction.

I live in the country so sighting an uncommon bird or having a rare visit from a snake or bat (both this past week!) for example, always has me googling or pondering for the obscure meaning.

Looking for metaphorical significance encourages us to look beyond logic, and to be open to sensing and intuiting relevant meaning for our lives.

Thanks, Cathy. What a wonderful comment. I love the concept of “looking beyond logic.” Isn’t it wonderful to lead a “magical” life?
