Creator or Created?

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to a speaker relay a story about his wife dragging him to an art show.  He was commenting on his inability to appreciate the artwork he observed because it was created by humans and not God.

I found that comment interesting.  Being a believer in that we were created in God’s image and likeness and that we are an extension of His creative power I thought, “But isn’t that how God creates?”

I wonder what happens in this man’s world?  Really.  Does he have no art on his walls?  I highly doubt it given his wife’s passion.  So he believes that the art he can appreciate was literally painted (or drawn or whatever) by God Almighty Himself?  Hmmmmm.

The soap he uses in the shower was created by . . .?  The HDTV he probably watches was created by . . .?  The car I know he drives was created by . . .?

My husband and I recently rented the movie, Evan Almighty.  I think the author did a good job of subtly addressing this very issue.  God used “Evan,” our modern-day Noah, to build the ark.  Think about this for a moment:  What do you think would have happened if an ark had just appeared in someone’s back yard?  I mean, if God were to start creating things “out of the blue,” don’t you think people would freak out?  I do.  I think we’d have mass chaos.

God knows that, that’s why He gave us talents and the inspiration to develop skills and a passion to pursue them even when we get tired.

Personally, I believe that we are an extension of God, source energy.  God creates through us because that is how it was intended to be in the first place.  Yes, we are created as the speaker was saying, but we are also creators.

Almost everyone I know has had some sort of “Divine Inspiration” at some time in their lifetime.  Many of us, especially us artistic types, experience that essence on a constant basis.  Some dismiss it as “a hunch,” or “based on previous experience,” but I don’t.  I know where my brilliant ideas come from.  Do you?

Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness

I have an amazing podcast for you today.  Debbie Reinhart of Faces without Places sat down with me last week and opened my eyes to a situation I thought I understood, but was grossly remiss.

It’s easy for those of us who believe in the law of attraction to say, “Homeless people attracted that experience to themselves.”  Okay.  I’ll give you that.  And I’m the first to admit that we must accept complete responsibility for everything that happens in our lives.

But what about the children?  What about spreading hope?  What responsibility do we have as believers in an abundant universe to give the children and youth who are living in these circumstances the hope they need so that they can create the lives they desire?

Don’t get me wrong about this podcast.  This is not going to leave you feeling down or burdened or negative in any way.  There is no sermon here.  In fact, I found discussing this issue with Debbie to be a very uplifting and inspiring experience.  Debbie is so sincerely passionate about this topic that I believe she could take it on by herself.  In fact, at the end of our time together, she made a comment to the effect of, “I’m motivated now to do even more.”  And I have a strong feeling that she will.  But I want to help her, and I think you will, too.

I believe with all my heart that this podcast is meant to bring people together.  No one is asking you to do anything you don’t want to do and they are not just asking for money.  My challenge to all of my readers today is to listen to this podcast with an open heart and do what you feel inspired to do.

Carnival of Healing #113: Healthy Living

Allow me to set the scene:  It’s the day after Thanksgiving, the grass is green, leaves are still falling, the sun is shining, and snow is flying; it’s another beautiful day in rural Kentucky!  While many families have driven into the city to start their holiday shopping, I am gleefully sitting in my home office, observing my wonderful surroundings, and preparing this week’s Carnival of Healing.

When Something Seems Too Good to be True . . .

I’m sure you’ve all heard the old adage, “If something seems to good to be true, it probably is.”  And I’m sure you, like me, can recount many instances of when you fell for some scheme or ploy that turned out just that way.  At the same time, I’m sure you can count many blessings that have come into your life that, if you stopped to thing about them long enough, you would have thought were “too good to be true.”  Maybe it’s a relationship, a job, a salary, or just something that years ago, you would never have dreamed would have happened to you.  Yet, it did happen to you.

So what’s the difference?  What is the real, discernable, difference between something that is too good to be true and our most amazing blessings?  How can anything be too good to be true if we are the creators of our life experience and we can have, do, or be anything we want?  Is a subject too good to be true simply because we believe it to be so?

One of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome in learning to trust my intuition is this very subject of “too good to be true.”  There are days when my life feels too good to be true.  I will sometimes catch myself thinking, “Is this really happening?”  I’m sure you’ve had those moments, also.  But how do you know the difference between a great opportunity and a scam?

Now, I’m not talking about those junk e-mails we all receive telling us our e-mail address has just been randomly selected to receive one million British pounds. (!)  I’m talking about the e-mail or phone call you get from a friend, motivational speaker, or someone whose list you’ve signed up for that you kind of trust, but the offer, “seems too good . . .”

According to Abraham, when you’re receiving information from your higher self, the inspiration will feel like the next logical step.  And in my personal experience, that is exactly what I have found to be true.  Let me give you some examples.  I’ll start with some extremes, and then go to the more subtle, explaining how I use this knowledge to my personal benefit.

Let’s say that I receive an e-mail from one of my favorite motivational speakers, Brian Tracy.  This happens every day, by the way, because I am on several of his lists.  And let’s say that this offer promises that I’ll make one million dollars by this time tomorrow if I simply purchase such-and-such product.  Do I bite?  No. Why?  I’m just not in a place yet, vibrationally, where I believe that making one million dollars overnight is possible.  It doesn’t seem logical – for me.  Now, I know other people have done it and do it.  And rest assured, I’d certainly like to do it, but my belief system is not there yet.  Why?  I don’t know – that’s another blog post!

Now, let’s say that I get another e-mail, this time from Tom Antion.  And it reads something like this:  “Debra, learn how to double your website traffic in 24 hours.”  Again, a purchase is required.  Will I bite?  Probably.  Especially if I’ve been thinking about and wondering about ways to do that.  What’s the difference?  If I’ve been thinking about how to increase my website traffic, and I get an e-mail from a trusted source, it feels like the next logical step; an “answer to prayer,” sort to speak.  Doesn’t that make sense?

These two different programs could cost exactly the same amount; I would still be more likely to purchase the second than the first.  The first simply seems too good to be true, while the second feels like the next logical step.

Here’s where it gets tricky.  Let’s say that I have been dreaming and thinking thoughts like, “Boy, I’d really like to figure out a way to make a million dollars overnight.”  Then this e-mail lands in my inbox.  What is one to do then?  Well, it all boils down to that next logical step and how I feel.  If I’m really in tune with my inner being, I will know whether or not to bite.  And sometimes, we can know that we’re being lied to, but we take the “opportunity” anyway.  That’s how a lot of us get burned, but let’s take a minute to talk about that.

If you purchase something with the thinking, “This is not going to work.  Things like this always backfire on me – it’s always too good to be true.”  Guess what will happen?  Yep – you’re going to get exactly what you expect.  But if you make the purchase thinking, “This is it!  I can feel it!  I am going to be a millionaire!”  Then you’ll probably get exactly what you expect as well.

Now here is something interesting that happened to me recently.  I decided to self-publish my motivational book, Wake Up and Create the Life You Want.  I had asked my inner being for guidance on exactly how to go about it – there are so many options out there.  About a day later I found an old NSA note about InstantPublisher.com.  I checked out the site and became so excited!  Everything was falling into place – it felt like the next logical step; the thing to do.  My only hesitancy was in their promise to ship the books in “less than 7-10 working days.”  I thought, “That doesn’t seem possible.”  It would have been nice had the books shipped in that amount of time considering I had a seminar coming up and I would have been able to offer a printed copy of my book to the participants, but the time frame was very close.

At any rate, I began the process and decided that if the books arrived in time – great – if not, I wasn’t any worse off than I’d started out.  It has now been 15 business days since I placed my order and according to their website, my books are just now “ready to bind.”

I knew going into this that the 7-10 days-promise was “too good to be true.”  However, doing business with this company also seemed like “the next logical step.”  Jerry Hicks would probably say that since we create our own reality, I’m getting exactly what I expect from this company.  I think he’s probably right.  I’m finding it more difficult to get upset with others these days now that I understand how my own feelings and vibration control so much of what happens around me.  But that’s a good thing, since getting upset with others never seemed to do any good anyway!

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from this is that life is not about either/or; life is and, and, and.  You will always want more and you can always have more, one logical step at a time.  You can have your cake and eat it, too.  How?  Eat the cake and then bake another one!  If you go through life thinking, “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too – that’s too good to be true!”  You’re going to miss out on a lot of cake.  Instead, start thinking, “I know – I’ll eat this cake, and then bake another one.  Yes!  That feels like the next logical step!”

See?  Good.  I knew you would.  Now, back to that million dollars . . . .

Have a joyful day!

Be Careful What You Cause Others to Picture

I was supposed to have a teleconference with a friend of mine this past week.  We get together every once in a while and talk about our businesses.

She e-mailed me the day before our call to say that she had come down with the stomach flu and might need to postpone our call.

Well, of course I understand, I have had the stomach flu and let me tell you, it was not fun!  I’m not going to go into any details, and I’ll explain why in just a minute, but it is much worse than the regular flu virus that goes around every year.  If you’ve ever had it, you know what I’m talking about!

I heard a motivational speaker talk about this concept once a long time ago, and I’ve heard sales seminar leaders discuss it as well:  Be careful what you cause others to visualize.  The reasoning is this:  When someone you’re speaking to gets a clear picture of what you’re talking about, if he thinks about it for very long, he starts vibrating in that direction.

Now, this can be a very good thing.  It’s a great way to get students interested in a particular subject and to maintain their interest.

However, it can also be used to lower someone’s vibration.  Let me explain.

My first inclination with my friend was to say, “Oh, I understand.  I had the stomach flu about three years ago and it was —————————-,” detailing my gross symptoms and experience with the illness.

Luckily for my friend, I caught myself in what I was about to do and stopped.  Thank goodness we were communicating by e-mail instead of by phone!  So I simply replied with, “I completely understand.  I hope you are feeling better soon.  Don’t worry about calling me, we’ll reschedule for another time.”

If I had given her all the details, and again, I’m not even giving them to you here because I don’t want you to picture them, her visualization of my symptoms could have brought on worse symptoms that she might not have been having, or even prolonged her illness.  The best thing you can do when you’re feeling bad physically is think thoughts like, “Well, I know I’m going to survive this, and it will be over soon.”  Then do your best to get your mind completely off of your ailments.  This is when watching lots of television can be a good thing; watch repeats of your favorite sit-coms.  Just do your best to remember what it feels like to be well, and living your life the way you want to be, and you’ll be back on track in very short order.

For the flip side of this, a better way to have helped my friend, in that perfect, 20/20 hindsight, would have been to have made something up like, I had the stomach flu three years ago and what really help me recover quickly was re-reading all of my favorite books.  (Something to occupy her mind in a good way.)  The problem with the stomach flu is that food is not your friend for a couple of days, and it’s hard to steer completely clear of it, even in books.  Magazines and TV are covered with food ads.  But if your friend is pretty sharp and you can tell her what you’re doing, she’ll get it, and she can protect herself from non-uplifting images.

You can do this as a point of influence to everyone around you, by the way, sick or not sick.  If your daughter dreams of being a doctor when she grows up, buy her the play clothes to go with it – whatever her imagination comes up with – help her play it out.

I will often ask my husband, “Do you ever see yourself [doing this or that] . . .”  The answer tells me what his desire is and how I can best support him.

This is another reason why watching the news and seeing all those negative images is so damaging to us – it causes us to picture something that is not in alignment with who really are and want to become.  We feel bad about those stories and then we start to worry about, “well, what if something like that happened to me?”  Then we recount the story to our friends and neighbors and on and on the discord continues.  Do you see?

So the next time you’re feeling bad, on any level, whether it’s for yourself, or someone else, stop and think, “what am I picturing?”  You have control of the pictures in your mind’s eye.  And when you want to help someone else, you can either ask them point blank what they are picturing, or you can make an educated guess and then try to turn it around for them.

Until next time,
Picture good things!

Another Way to Appreciate

Before I get started with today’s post, I have a housekeeping task to take care of first.  I am hosting next week’s Carnival of Healing.  I have already had one submission and it alone has inspired me so I know we’re going to have a great carnival.  I’d love to accept your posts.  You can submit your article here.  Just one thing to keep in mind for getting on my site:  Please, please, keep it positive!  Your article can be thought-provoking, humorous, or factual, I don’t care, as long as it is positive.  If all you want to do is whine and complain, write in your journal.  If you can’t express yourself without using foul language, pick up a dictionary.  The final criterion is this:  If it’s too embarrassing for my 85 year-old father-in-law to read, it doesn’t make the cut!

With that being said and done, I’ve been inspired today with a new way to appreciate.  I don’t know why this has never occurred to me before, I’ve had to have read something similar to this is Esther Hicks’ work, but it only “hit me” this week.  I suppose when the student is ready, the teacher really will appear.  Here it is:  Love and appreciation are in so many ways the same thing.  Did you know that in many cultures, the word “love” does not even exist?  The language uses a word more similar to “appreciation” or “honor” instead.  Isn’t that interesting?  I think it is and here’s why.

In Western culture, we have come to almost think of love as a four-letter word . . .  wait a minute . . .let me do that over!  Well, I think you know what I mean.  Most romantic sit-coms these days revolve around the first time a man or woman says, “I love you.”  Don’t be the one to say it first – that’s a bad, horrible, thing to admit!  What if the other person doesn’t feel the same way?  Oh, the humiliation love brings!

I’ve written before about the teacher I know who tells her students that “you can’t love something that can’t love you back.”  The more I think about that statement the more I think, “How sad.”

I love my cats.  Do they love me back?  They’ve never said that they love me.  But then, they can’t, can they?  But when they sit next to me while I’m writing a blog post and purr as they fall asleep, it certainly feels as if they love me- one on one side, one on the other – I love it!  Oops!  That feeling can’t love me back – therefore, I shouldn’t love it?

But I do!

Frankly, I don’t think we use the word love enough.  I teach a lot about going on rampages of appreciation, but if you want to get really excited about your life, make a list of everything you love.  This is the concept that just hit me this week.  So here I go with my list – hoping to inspire yours.

I love my cats, I love my husband, I love my entire family, and I love my friends.  (Not necessarily in that order, now, give me a break!)  I love my career, I love the work I do, and I love blogging.  I love my home, I love my car, and I love my lawn furniture.  I love my TV, TiVo, and living room.  I love the opportunities that are constantly streaming my way, the universe for sending them to me, my guardian angels for watching over me, and my inner being for constantly guiding me.  I love all of the women who work for my husband and make his load lighter.  I love the members of this community for supporting me and my entire family in our businesses and in our lives.  I love having the opportunities and talents to give back.  I love God for creating all of this in the first place, and for empowering me with the gift of infinite creation.  I love the fact that this is just the beginning and that while I’m leaving out so many things, that very fact shows me how amazingly abundant I am.  I love it all, and I love my life.

Now, could I have used the word “appreciate” in each of those statements?  Yes.  And that’s what I’ve been doing, deliberately.  And it has worked.  But today, for whatever reason, using the word “love” just feels more fun, more exciting, and more uplifting.

What’s the difference?

I’m not sure there is any.  Maybe we are supposed to love unconditionally and appreciate things and people for what they do.  Maybe I am supposed to appreciate my TV, and love my husband.  Does that mean I can’t appreciate my husband and love my TV?

It’s a very fine line, isn’t it?

I’m not coming to any conclusions for you today.  Right now, it feels good to love everything, and I’m going with it.  I challenge you to start loving a lot more.

Pick up your cat and tell it you love it.  And please, please, come back here and let me know if it suddenly starts speaking English and tells you it loves you back!

Until next time,
Love!

Personal Development Retreat for Women

Well, I’ve been kicking this idea around for about a year now and I think I’m ready.  And since what we think about we bring about . . .

A reader contacted me about this time last year asking if I’d ever considered giving a retreat like Christine Kane.  I had not even heard of this type of thing, but as one who is always open to new ideas, I attended Kristine’s next retreat as “research.”  It was wonderful.

I didn’t feel that I was ready quite yet for that sort of thing, but after yesterday, I believe I am.  I spent the day with 11 wonderful women who share my passion for personal development.  We had a great time!  But honestly, I’m tired of the classroom approach for this type of material.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I will continue to do one day seminars; if you’re just starting down the path of personal development a one-day seminar is a nice first step.

But it would have been nice, especially with this group, to be able to “take a breather” sort of speak.  In the afternoon, it would have been nice to break out into groups and do some of the activities I teach:  One Hour of Solitude, vision boards, identity boards, personal mission statements, values clarification, personal strategic planning, time management, personal motivation, rampages of appreciation, etc.

I feel like I give a ton of great information, but it’s too much to absorb in one day.  It would be extremely beneficial to have the time to practice the ideas and concepts before going back to your “real” world.

It would be nice to offer massages, mani-pedi’s, facials, yoga, maybe a fitness class, treadmills, and wonderful, gourmet, food.  One-stop shopping; a total retreat where you could do all of those wonderful things for yourself that you’re always talking about, but have to run all over town to do and so, because it feels like a chore, you just never get around to it.

So what do you think?  If you would be interested in attending a retreat like this, please complete the form below.  You will not be obligated in any way.  I am just getting started on this so I know your commitment would depend on many factors:  cost, location, and timing, among others.  Completing the form below signs you up only for correspondence about the retreat.  I might send out a questionnaire asking for input and feedback on ideas as I create this, but that’s all – no spam – no sales pitches for other stuff, I promise.

Thanks for your support; have a joyful day, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Joy or Pleasure?

Today’s post is also available on podcast.

I had the opportunity last month to attend the I Can Do It conference sponsored by Hay House Publishing and attended a seminar led by Dr. Doug Weiss titled, “The Power of Pleasure.”  I got exactly what I wanted out of the seminar; I work so much I had forgotten how to identify those things that bring me pleasure so that I can enjoy my life more.

One of the sideline conversations that started after the course was the definitions of the words “pleasure,” and “joy.”

For me, what brings me joy is completely differently from what I consider to be pleasure, and if I tried to live solely on my pleasures, I’d need more and more to fulfill my life.  Let me explain.

Pleasure is something that you do for the fun of it.  Watching your favorite (uplifting) television show, playing tennis, going out for a nice, decadent, dinner, or going for a walk.

Joy is experienced when I do something that helps others on a deep level.  It’s a much longer lasting emotion and requires using my talents and acquired skills – and fulfilling my mission.

For a lot of people, their jobs bring them joy – actually, your job should bring you joy!  I’ve often used my husband as an example of someone who loves their work.  He loves being a Dentist – it brings him joy on a deep, satisfying level to help people the way he does.  He gets pleasure out of playing keyboards for a local community singing group or a church praise band.

After making this distinction for myself, I think a lot of people are labeled as “workaholics,” when they might just be pursuing their joy.  After all, it was my husband’s love for his work that inspired me to follow my passion for training and seminar leading.  It’s hard work, but I love it!  There’s a deep level of satisfaction that comes after a “hard day’s work” in this area – at least for me – and I could not get this level of happiness from an evening at Ruth’s Chris.

However, there is much to be said about reaching for pleasure, and that is the point that Dr. Weiss was making.  Pleasure is a much needed experience in our lives.  Without it, we can get burned out.  It’s all about balance.  We need those physical and spiritual pleasures throughout our day to give us a break from all the work – no matter how joyous it may be.  Without pleasure, we work too hard, and without joy, we are unfulfilled.

So start today by striking a balance between joy and pleasure; you’ll be glad you did!

Until next time,
Live joyfully, with lots of pleasure!

7 Ways to Increase Your Confidence

Whether it’s trying something new, or having to re-think old patterns and habits, all of us face the challenge of maintaining our confidence at times.  Here are a few tricks I’ve learned; I know you’ll find something that works for you.

1.  Immerse yourself in learning. One the biggest confidence boosters I know is when you’re so knowledgeable on a particular subject, it seems that no one knows more than you.  Now, you’re not going to use this to rub other peoples’ noses in it, instead, you’re going to feel confident that no matter what someone wishes to discuss on the topic, you will have something to share.  Yes, this can really impress people in meetings or even dinner parties, but the greatest benefit is the way you feel about yourself when you are well versed in the topic at hand.

2.  Dial it up. In “Your Destiny Switch,” Peggy McColl shares some wonderful insights on how to use your emotions to make your dreams come true.  Peggy would have you imagine (or even better – go out and buy) a dimmer switch.  At the bottom of the dimmer switch place the word, “Insecurity.”  At the top of the dimmer switch place the word, “Confidence.”  First imagine where you are right now.  Then imagine dialing it up.  As you do this, not only will your confidence increase, but you will begin to get ideas on how to increase your confidence.  It’s a double-whammy!  Don’t you love those?

3.  Remember your successes. Remember my post, “The Motivational Trick that Works - EVERY Time?”  The reason it works so well is because it reminds you of your successes.  A lot of times, that’s all I need to get my confidence back on track.  It’s like self-talk that so many motivational gurus discuss, only with proof behind it.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

4.  Look the part. Sometimes it’s helpful just to put on the right clothes and stand in front of the mirror.  Sometimes, we don’t have the right clothes.  So what do you do in that case?  Go out and buy them!  “You’ve Only Got Three Seconds,” applies to yourself as well. Want confidence on a regular basis?  Look your best every day.

5.  Act the part. Remember Spock on Star Trek?  I’ve written before about how Leonard Nimoy, the actor who played the Spock character, said that he became more logical and more like that character after playing him for so long.  Act like someone who is confident, act like you are confident, and, well, I think you get the idea, but here’s the quote again.

“Spock had a big, big effect on me.  I am so much more Spock-like today than when I first played the part in 1965 that you wouldn’t recognize me.  I’m not talking about appearance, but thought processes.  Doing that character, I learned so much about rational logical thought that it reshaped my life.”

So, play the part of someone with total confidence.  I don’t know why, but Donald Trump just popped into my head.  Hello, Don!

6.  Stand/sit up straight. Your mother didn’t like to see you slouching because it portrayed an image of you that went against what she wanted for you – complete and total confidence.  Along with looking the part and playing the part, standing or sitting up straight can help you to feel the part of utter confidence.  Try it.  Right now!

7.  Smile. Ah, the Power of a Smile.  There’s just no way that a person with a big, huge, grin on their face can be anything but confident.

Until next time,
Be confident!

Do You Have It?

Do you have it?  I had it and lost it, but then found it again.  Paula Froelich has written a book about “it!

What is it?  How does one find it?  Why is it important? Who has it? Where can a person go to get in touch with it?  When am I going to stop playing this game and define “it?”

“It” is that something special that makes you unique.  What makes you – you?  What is it?  Do you still have it?  If not, where did it go?  How can you get it back again?  That’s what today’s post is about.

We all know that we are unique.  We are told that from a very early age.  Then we spend a lot of time trying to fit in and be “normal.”  After a certain period of time, we grow tired of normalcy - and who wouldn’t? - so we go back to being unique.  However, we sometimes lose sight of those qualities that made us unique when we first came into this world.

I talk a lot on this site about finding your passion.  Your passion is part of what makes you unique, although there are only so many subjects and we often find others who share our passion – not so unique after all, huh?  But the way you go about pursuing your passion will be unique to you.  Your excitement, enthusiasm, and zeal for your life, your everyday life, are yours and yours alone.  Isn’t that wonderful?

There are other attributes about you that come together in a way like never before – and never will again.  So what are they?  Well, that’s for you to figure out, but I’m going to help you.

Below is a list of questions that you can answer yourself, or get help from others who know you well, that will help you in determining what “it” is.  Don’t worry, once you find it, you will know it, and becoming aware of it is so exhilarating that you’ll be glad you took the time to find/get in touch with it again!

Ready?  Here we go.

  1. What do you daydream about?
  2. What do you dream about at night?
  3. What qualities do others often recite about you?
  4. What qualities do you admire in yourself?
  5. What special skills do you have and enjoy?
  6. What gives you pleasure?
  7. What have you been told that you are better at than anyone else?
  8. When someone needs help from you, what do they ask you to do?
  9. If you could choose the perfect career, what would it be and why?
  10. When you remember your happiest moments, what were you doing?
  11. Of what achievements are you most proud?
  12. List three big goals you have set and achieved.
  13. List the three biggest lessons you have ever learned.
  14. List three people you are proud to say you know.
  15. List the most important places you’ve ever visited.
  16. If you found out you were going to die tomorrow, what would you list as your contributions to the world?  Why were you here?

Now, what is it?  You have it; I know you do.

If you’d like to share what you’ve learned from this exercise, feel free to leave a comment on this post.

Until next time,
Live with purpose!
